Introduction

Players like Airtel, Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications are estimated to have laid off close to 6,000 people over the last one year. Suddenly, the sector has too few jobs and too many professionals, a far cry from two years ago when telecom was the sunrise sector in terms of employment.

A large number of professionals - many in their 40s with children in schools and home loans to pay - are battling the rising wave of layoffs in India's telecom sector. It seems everybody is confused and nobody has concrete answers about their future, however, it's certain that those who fear losing the job most will be the first to lose it.

Every passing day telecom market is more and more complex to understand. Disruptive business models, technologies, unfolding scams, no clear policy framework, ongoing layoffs, shrinking profits and above all impatient customers are making this market very chaotic. Telecom eco-systems were easier to comprehend in the days of monopolies and nationalized postal, telegraph and telephone organizations (PTTs). Nowadays, they include everything from developers, devices, mobile apps, Facebook, Twitter, Google and billing systems...

With the above background, it makes a logical sense to equip yourself with new skills and competencies to get ahead of the game.
